About McKruger Spirits

The dynamic founding duo, Colleen McCloy and Stella Kruger, began their creative journey in 2015.

They took taking their love for cooking and experimenting with different spices into their gin making, distilling small batches in their kitchen on an Alembic Still. 

McKruger launched their first gin Die Volstruis in 2018, infused with wild Madagascan pepper, vanilla and fresh green Granny Smith apples.

Our Process

The decision to do a cold distilling for this batch was mainly to keep the fresh ingredients intact. Taking the temperature up to just 28 degrees instead of the conventional 78 degrees Celsius ensuring that you are able to get the fresh flavours from all the botanicals. A bold move on their part as South Africa is still used to conventional distilling instead of cold distilling. But then again McKruger Spirits are made up of two odd birds with a nature to take risks and experiment with new technology.

Die Volstruis Gin - on the nose juniper, vanilla and apple that opens up after adding
a cube of ice, to the spicey wild pepper. As we respect all palates the taste will
be different for each person just like we intended. Smooth with a well balanced taste
of the botanicals blending together in unison making this an easy drinking gin filled
with freshness.


Gin is liquor that derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries. Gin is one of the broadest categories of spirits, all of various origins, styles, and flavour profiles, that revolve around juniper as a common ingredient.
